It’s Christmas again, but not all over!
(by Luigi Luciano - December 06, 2007)
Why is it that at this time of year Christians have to go through the annual Christmas battle?
Every year we come under attack. All we hear about in the media is how this time of year is critical to the retail businesses. They take in up to 50% of their yearly sales during this season. Yet many stores have stayed away from calling it Christmas shopping and don’t even allow employees to say Merry Christmas.
Why is this? They say that it is now “The Holiday Season” I say it’s a bunch of bull.
This country has been celebrating Christmas for a long time and it has always been the Christmas season. I have never heard any of my Jewish friends say they are offended when someone wishes them a Merry Christmas. So why has it heated up over the past few years?
Political correctness has everyone scared. What happens if we offend people who celebrate Ramadan, Kwanzaa, Chanukah or even Festivus? This is ridiculous. I have not heard anyone complain about Christmas unless they were either an Atheist or just have no life.
Traditions that have been around for as long as I can remember are gone. "Happy Holidays" is everywhere. Christmas trees are being re-christened "holiday trees." Schools take "holiday breaks" and host "holiday programs" where they sing de-Christianized "holiday carols." Stores announce "holiday sales" and promote "holiday gifts." We cannot have a manger scene on the town hall property because we will offend someone.
When will it stop? When the people who complain get what they want, Christianity gets put on the back burner.
Heck a kid can’t pray on school property but a Muslim child is allowed to use a room during schools hours to pray.
This year so far Lowe’s (who has since sent an apology) took out the word Christmas from their catalog and called all the trees “Family Trees”. In their apology they blamed it on the proofing system and that no one caught the fact that all the trees were called family instead of Christmas trees. I for one am not buying it. How can a huge company who plans these catalogs so far in advance not catch every page with no reference to Christmas?
Then we have the Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic. For these three companies, all owned by Gap, the only items listed as having anything to do with Christmas were a pair of boxer shorts and a child's sleepwear set.
Yet Christians spend millions of dollars on gift to celebrate Christmas. Where would stores like the Gap be if we did not? I sure as heck would like to see that.
I have said for years Christmas has become too commercialized. If most Christians actually celebrated Christmas by not giving gifts and just getting together with their families the economy would collapse.
It is crazy what is happening in our society.
I found this sort of poem online that makes a good point about Christmas and I thought I would share it with you here. May you all have a Merry CHRISTmas!
Twas the month before Christmas
When all through our land,
Not a Christian was praying
Nor taking a stand.
See the PC Police had taken away,
The reason for Christmas - no one could say.
The children were told by their schools not to sing,
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.
It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say
December 25th is just a "Holiday".
Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit
Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!
CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod
Something was changing, something quite odd!
Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.
As Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe's the word Christmas - was no where to be found.
At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears
You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.
Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty
Are words that were used to intimidate me.
Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Clinton!
At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.
And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace
The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.
So as you celebrate "Winter Break" under your "Dream Tree"
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.
Choose your words carefully, choose what you say
Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS, not Happy Holiday!
