Luigi remembers September 11, 2001

(by Luigi Luciano - September 20, 2007)
I was not planning to write about remembering 9/11 until September 11 came.  It was too early for me last week since our deadlines are 1 week ahead. But on September 11 I started to think again about 2001.

Last Tuesday I got up and began my day as usual. While reading my e mails I kind of lost track of the day and didn’t realize that is was actually September 11. Then my wife came down the stairs leaving early. I remembered she was going to her sister in laws home who’s husband died in the towers on 9/11.

While driving to work I heard the reading of the names and the first moment of silence. Then it hit me. Things started coming back to me about September 11, 2001. I stopped at the bagel shop and they had the memorial service on the TV. That led the guy behind the counter to tell me where he was on 9/11.

I find it fascinating how we all associate where we were and what we were doing that day without even being asked. I can recall most of my actions that day when finding out about the towers. First writing it off to an accident then saying what is going on when the second plane crashed. Then fear when the third plane went into the Pentagon and the fourth into the ground in PA.

Rushing home and taking my children out of school to be at home and with me.

Watching the towers collapse into dust and just staring at the TV in disbelief. All those things came back to me last Tuesday while driving to work. I could feel myself choking up just thinking about what those people must have been going through whether sitting on the plane knowing they were heading toward a building or in the building watching the planes come at them with no place to go.

That fear later turned into anger against the people that did this to us. Radical Muslims who want the world to conform to their way of life. A life that no good human being would ever want if it means you have to kill people to try to get them to believe in your religion.

This is a sad day and will always be. Unlike things that happen over seas and we really do not feel the affects here, this we saw, felt and sympathized together.

For a period after the attacks we all got along. People showed their patriotism by flying flags everywhere. We then went to war and people had signs supporting our troops.

Six years later I see a whole different story. I see people who seem to forget that we are still at war. I am not talking in Iraq but here at home. This war is far from over. They attacked us here in 2001 and we have foiled multiple planned attacks since then and there will be others in our future.

With regards to the war in Iraq like it or not Bush’s fault or not we have brave soldiers there who are trying to stabilize the region for our security. If it was anything else I’d say let them blow each other up and leave.

While we were remembering 9/11 our friends in Congress and the Senate were calling the General in charge of the war a liar and a puppet in so many words.  Why? Because the politicians who oppose this war do not care about our safety, our troops or our country they only care about winning an election.

Someone who really cares about our safety would not say and do the things they do in undermining the people who are trying to keep us safe.  Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker who reported to the congress, senate and other committees where ambushed by the Democrats before they even spoke about the report.

What is really strange is that this is the man the Democrats appointed to run the war and now because things are going better in Iraq they sell him out. In fact I found it funny how the liberal media started setting the stage before the report was out. ABC News said even before Petraeus' report to Congress; Democrats have already delivered their report card on him.

Sen. Joseph Biden described the report as "dead, flat wrong" while Sen. John Kerry declared that "none of us should be fooled."  NBC said Petraeus is likely to tell Congress that keeping U.S. forces at current levels until spring is the only way to keep Iraq from descending into chaos.

The New York Times reported on its front page that Petraeus "has recommended that decisions on the contentious issue of reducing the main body of the American troops in Iraq be put off for six months."

The Los Angeles Times headlined its story, "No Surprises Expected In Petraeus' Iraq Report," saying, "Since spring, President George W. Bush has publicly staked the future of his troop buildup strategy" on the report.

The newspaper said Petraeus' report "may not have as much impact as the White House had hoped, because his message already has been widely anticipated -- and even previewed by the general himself."

General Petraeus stated before he gave his testimony “I wrote this testimony myself. It has not been cleared by, nor shared with, anyone in the Pentagon, the White House or Congress”

Bu they did not believe that. In fact the scary part of all according to House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) when asked on a TV show what if the report shows good news from Iraq: He said "it would be a problem for us [Democrats]."

How alarming should this be to all Americans? to any sane American very. This is basically saying that the Democrats are willing to lose the war in Iraq to win the White House in 08.

This should be an eye opener to all. Can we trust anything they say about the war? It has to be a resounding NO!

The off the left wing moveon.org ran an ad with the headline “General Petraeus or General Betray Us?” What a horrible message. Now everyone is calling for the Democrats to condemn the message as the other politicians have done. But they cannot. The founder of that site contributes a lot of money to their party.

September 11 should be a time that we remember that there are evil people who hate us not because we are in Iraq but because we exist. The average person needs to understand that we are under attack here in the states and we need to succeed in Iraq and other places we are now.  We need to have people in office who really care about us and want what is best for us not what is best for them. It is impossible to trust the Democrats who run around saying we need to retreat from Iraq.

The funny part is the General gave a time line for withdrawal after talking about how the surge is working. But that was not good enough for the Democrats even though it is what they have been asking for. Why? Because if we win in Iraq they lose political power.

I really urge Americans to look at these politicians who oppose the war and why do they. It is OK not to agree with the war and really ant things to change for the right reason. But to try to spread the propaganda for their won political gain should be an outrage.

To make matter worse for the negative them have done in the press and to our troops the majority of Americans do not agree with them at all and they have a lower approval rating than the President.

I guess when you get down to it there are some smart Americans left.
