How things have changed… or not

(by Luigi Luciano - July 19, 2007)
The longer you work the more you get to know about people. If you are with a company for a long period of time you know more about the people you work with than some members of your own family.

Most of us have worked with other people day in and day out. In the old days it was a lot more fun than it is today.

In the good old days you could get away with saying things to people without the worry about someone reporting you.

I had worked for myself for most of my life. I had about 20+ employees at the peak of the business. Most of them were women. There were only 3 guys and the rest women. There was a time when one of the employees had breast enlargement surgery. When she came back to work after the recovery period she was more than thrilled to rip open her blouse and show off her new found friends to all the woman in the office.

When I wanted to institute a course on sexual harassment they all opted out because they said they have been sexually harassing people for years and didn’t need any help.

Things have changed a lot over the years much of it not for the better. It was so nice to be able to talk openly and freely without the worry of lawsuits. People that work together now at my office are great but we all have to be careful of what we say and do. I say let’s go back to the good old days. Life’s too short to take it so seriously.

I remember the only time I heard Spanish was when I was in High School. Things have changed a lot since then.

I was walking around the other day and saw a bunch of people talking. When I got closer all I heard was “Para Espanol primino numero dos”. Not exactly that because I know that means for “Spanish press number 2” complements of Verizon 411. But it could have been anything. They were jabbering away in Spanish. I’m not sure if they could understand English at all but more and more I feel like I am in another world.

It just amazes me how more people in this country only speak Spanish and not English. When did we become a country of Spanish speaking people?

This is so aggravating to me because I find it rude and insulting that they can’t or in many cases refuse to learn the language of the country they choose to live in.  Plus the fact is they might be talking about me and now I can’t understand them. That’s not fair! This is my country and I should be able to talk about them and they are the ones that are not supposed to understand me not the other way around.

Some things never change. I look at the politicians we have in office. They are good at calling the kettle black. This past week the Iraq report came out. The Democrats in office are complaining that the new Iraqi government is incompetent. Can the Democrats in charge tell me what makes them so competent? So far they have been in office since January and have not accomplished one thing. They have spent the past few months filing lawsuits against the current administration instead of helping to solve some of the important issues here at home. In fact the funniest thing they comment on was that the Iraqi government can’t decide how to divide the money from all their oil. I would bet the Democrats would know what to do with it. They would suggest that the government take the money from the oil and put it into entitlement programs. They could start the Iraqi version of our Social Security and welfare. The only difference is that with the amount of people blowing themselves up in Iraq their Social Security would never go broke like ours. If a lower income family does not get enough money for their child to blow themselves up in the hopes of finding those 70 virgins they would be able to apply for welfare.

Years back it was Japan that we imported just about everything from. How things have changed. Now it is China. Almost anything you find here in the states says made in China. Over the past few months China has sent imports to us that have not been so good. We have had our pets dying from tainted cat and dog foods. Then we had toothpaste with some sort of poison in it. Most recently we have had tires that were not manufactured properly and were falling apart. What’s up with all this garbage being sent our way? These people are manufacturing machines. They churn out just about anything they can. Except china. I don’t think China manufacture is china. The China plates are made in England and even in Syracuse NY. The other thing I don’t think that is made in China and sold here are is the American Flag. We should never allow the Chinese to make our flags and sell them here. Especially when Mexico can make them for 10 cents less.

We’ll there are many things that change each year and some are for the better and some not. I opt to go back to the old days, the simple day, when everyone who came here learned our language because they wanted to.  When an office party had the drunk with the lamp shade on his head…when things were made in the US of A before the Unions destroyed our ability to manufacture things at a low cost.

Times were good but I guess they can be worse. Only time will tell.
