What have the Democrats been doing since November?
(by Luigi Luciano - June 20, 2007)
I am finally hearing about what the Democratic Party has been doing or not doing since being elected to the majority in November.
They promised voters change. They promised an end to the war. They promised work longer days and session in Congress. They also said they would wipe out the corruption in the government. This would be noticeable in the first 100 days as they said.
Off the official website www.democrats.org here is their 6-point plan once in power:
Honest Government & Open Government
We will end the Republican culture of corruption and restore a government as good as the people it serves, starting with real ethics reform.
This after they won the election:
House Democratic leaders, who have vowed to run a more ethical Congress, are struggling with how to respond to the reelection of Rep. William J. Jefferson, the Louisiana Democrat whose Washington home freezer once held $90,000 in alleged bribe money.
A supporting group, including ministers and the president of the local chapter of the NAACP, alleged the 16-count corruption indictment was the work of a Republican White House and Justice Department scheming to target black Democratic leaders and shift attention from legal troubles of Republican congressmen. Who else would have placed the cash in his Freezer? Republicans!
Energy Independence
We will create a cleaner, greener and stronger America by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, eliminating billions in subsidies for oil and gas companies and use the savings to provide consumer relief and develop energy alternatives, and investing in energy independent technology.
Meanwhile to date they have knocked down just about every over to drill for oil in our own country which would cut back on foreign dependency. Heck even Ted Kennedy blocked having wind turbines put in the waters near his home that would have cut energy consumption but he didn’t like that he would see them from his home in Hyannisport.
A Healthcare System that Works for Everyone
We will join 36 other industrialized nations in making sure everyone has access to affordable health care, starting by fixing the prescription drug program and investing in stem cell and other medical research.
If we are lucky Hillary will get in and we will have national health care. This will enable to be like the Canadians (who have government health care) who have to go to other countries because the wait and quality is so bad in Canada.
Plus we all see the way the government runs anything so why should we have to worry!
Real Security.
We will protect Americans at home and lead the world by telling the truth to our troops, our citizens and our allies. We believe in a strong national defense that is both tough and smart, recognizing that homeland security begins with hometown security.
Yes this is a good one. They voted for something like the war then they see things are going badly they decide they have had enough. They determined that protecting our country is good but we need to protect the terrorist rights more. So wire tapping, following trails of money and other activities that we have been doing successfully are no good. These are the people who will keep us safe.
Economic Prosperity and Educational Excellence
We will create jobs that stay in America and restore opportunity for all Americans, starting with raising the minimum wage, expanding Pell grants and making college tuition tax deductible. We also believe in budget discipline that reduces our deficit.
So they raised the minimum wage. They tried to add billions in pork projects to the war bill. I guess that is what they meant by reducing the deficit?
Secure retirement.
We will ensure that a retirement with dignity is the right and expectation of every single American, starting with pension reform, expanding saving incentives and preventing the privatization of social security.
Yes prevent the privatization of Social Security. That’s a great idea. This way the monies collected they could borrow and spend. By the way they do no participate in Social Security they can invest their retirement money any way they like.
In recapping this issue I have found that the Democrats have done absolutely nothing. In fact after Pelosi’s big announcement that the congress will work more than ever before and not take off like the Republicans did is another joke. At the rate they are working now they are on target to work 20 weeks of sessions which by the way are 4 day work weeks.
In summary, they want to work more but will end up working less.
They want an honest Government but will not condemn a man with 90,000 in his freezer saying it was a set up by the Republicans. By the way the have it on tape his accepting the money.
They want energy independence but will not allow us to open up land here in the United States to get the massive amounts of oil that we have. They want an affordable health care for all run by the government when the government can’t even run the Post Office correctly.
They want real security but will not allow the continued efforts that have been working without worrying about the rights of the terrorists.
They want economic growth but want to take back the tax cuts that have the economy thriving. They want secure retirement for through Social Security except for them.
Also they said they would end the war but did not cut off funding when they had the chance.
By the way they have a lower approval rating than the president does as of this writing. It is the worst showing for Congress since September 1999. Go figure.
